Ask an NCAA Rules Committee Member

Dear NCAA Rules Committee Member,
In recent months, I've noticed my husband has become more and more distant. At
first, I thought it was perhaps that he was taking on a number of large projects
at once at work. But now I'm starting to suspect an affair. What should I do?
-- Miserable in Minneapolis
Dear Minneapolis,
Rule 1-4-9-c explicitly states that a camera, with no audio
component, may be attached to the cap of the umpire with the prior approval of
the umpire and participating institutions. Radio and television timeouts are not
permitted during any extra period, and charged team timeouts during any extra
period may not be extended for radio and television purposes.
Dear NCAA Rules Committee Member,
My last boyfriend likes the Dave Matthews Band a whole lot, and he keeps coming
over to listen to some of my Dave Matthews CDs. I think he's not used to being
alone, however. So, how do I tell him to give me
some space?
-- Tuned Out in Toledo
Dear Tuned,
It is intended that the committee delete the exception that visual 25-second play clocks are not mandatory for
games played on the home field of NCAA Division III institutions, effective Aug.
1, 2003. This is subject to approval by the commission.
Dear NCAA Rules Committee Member,
Over the last few years, I've outgrown my friends, and I don't know how
to meet new ones. I hate the bar scene, don't attend church, and can't stand
the thought of hanging out with my co-workers. I don't even want to think about
Internet services. What's left for me?
-- Frustrated in Fairbanks
Dear Fairbanks,
As per rule 3-3-2-a, the game official shall declare a referee's timeout when
the runner's helmet comes off. Any charged team timeout shall be 30 seconds in
duration upon an approved visual signal made by the head coach of the team
requesting the timeout. Such a signal must be made promptly after the timeout.
Such a signal must be made promptly after the timeout is requested from the
field.
Dear NCAA Rules Committee Member,
I'm a 42-year-old woman just coming off a divorce. It's been really hard for me
but I'd like to get back "into the game," so to speak. My friend
swears by video dating, but I'm just not sure if I'm ready for such a gimmicky
thing. I'm thinking about going on a cruise instead. What do you think?
-- Lonely in Lansing
Dear Lonely,
In Rule 8-3-3-b-1, it is clearly stated that personal fouls against a passer
during a successful two-point conversion try will be enforced on the succeeding
kickoff or from the succeeding spot in extra periods. The runner is exempted
from the rule prohibiting hurdling. All penalties for offensive team fouls that
occur behind the neutral zone will be enforced from the previous spot.
