In Tom Osborne's first game as head coach, Nebraska explodes against the Bruins in Lincoln. Randy Borg returns a punt 77 yards for a score, Tony Davis punches out 147 yards on 24 carries, and John Dutton (left) tortures UCLA quarterback and future TV star Mark Harmon, who had done some pre-game talking, all day long.

Seeking to silence a Husker Nation full of critics, much-maligned quarterback Scott Frost (left) runs for two scores in leading the underdog Huskers past the No. 2 Huskies in Seattle. Led by Grant Wistrom and Jason Peter, NU's defense pounds QB Brock Huard out of the contest early. It's a catalyst in NU's drive for a third national title in four years.

After winning its first Big 8 title in more than two decades, NU take on the Tigers in Miami. QB Dennis Claridge scores on the second play from scrimmage, and the Cornhusker defense halts a last-second UA drive when John Kirby stops a fourth-down pass at the NU 11. The Huskers are Orange Bowl champions for the first -- but certainly not the last -- time.

Sophomore QBs Van Brownson and Jerry Tagge lead a powerful Cornhusker ground game that features a youngster by the name of Jeff Kinney (left).

A week after dropping to unheralded Washington State, Nebraska tackles the mighty Crimson Tide. In a battle that sees each team coming from behind twice, NU backup QB Randy Garcia leads the Husker win. Garcia also flips a TD pass to Rick Berns (left) off a fake field goal for a touchdown. Later, in an emotional locker room, the team presents Tom Osborne with the game ball.

The Huskers hand the "Four Horsemen" a loss for the second straight season in a dominating victory at Lincoln. Dave Noble runs for a TD and catches a pass from Rufus Dewitz for another score. The Irish score a late touchdown against the NU reserves.

Unleashing one of the most potent offenses in college football history, top-ranked Nebraska puts its stamp on the '83 season in the inaugural Kickoff Classic. Turner Gill, Irving Fryar (left) and Mike Rozier run wild. The defending national champion Lions can only muster a last-second touchdown against Husker reserves. Sports Illustrated proclaims "Oh, Those Huskers!"

NU fullback Frank Solich (left) races for 204 yards and three touchdowns -- including an 80-yarder on the first play of the game -- to power the Huskers past the stingy Falcons. Air Force closes to within three before Solich bursts off left side for a 59-yard score in the waning minutes of the game. The win preserved NU's first unbeaten regular season under Bob Devaney.

Nebraska, a school without a winning season since 1954,goes into Ann Arbor and stuns Big Ten giant Michigan behind quarterback Dennis Claridge, halfback Dennis Stuewe and fullback Bill "Thunder" Thornton. It's Bob Devaney's first win over a "major" opponent and becomes a springboard toward bigger and better things.

Colorado, unbeaten and ranked No. 2, comes to Lincoln for the 200th straight sellout at Memorial Stadium. The record-setting fans witness a victory for the ages: Backup QB Brook Berringer (left) coolly leads NU to 24 points and into the Big 8's drivers' seat. The Blackshirts shut down the high-powered CU attack, which includes eventual Heisman winner Rashan Salaam.

The catch heard round the world: Matt Davison's (left) acrobatic reception off the foot of Shevin Wiggins gives Nebraska new life in a see-saw classic at Faurot Field. Scott Frost races 12 yards around right end for the go-ahead TD in OT, and Mike Rucker redeems the Blackshirts by sacking Corby Jones on fourth down. And Nebraska lives to fight another day.

The Cornhuskers stun the nation by beating an Oklahoma team that had not lost in 74 conference games. NU holds off a last minute OU comeback attempt when Ron Meade intercepts a pass in the Nebraska end zone. The win sets off a wild celebration, prompting Chancellor Clifford Hardin to cancel classes on Monday.

For the first time in three years, Nebraska is in the Orange Bowl but is not playing for the title. But NU still gives retiring coach Bob Devaney (left) a going-away gift. The Bobfather starts Heisman winner Johnny Rodgers at I-back. The Jet makes the most of it, rushing for three TDs, catching a 50-yard scoring pass from David Humm and throwing a 52-yard TD bomb to Frosty Anderson. The Irish give up 560 yards, the most in their vaunted history.

In Coach Biff Jones' first game, the Cornhuskers rally to whip Minnesota, the defending national champions. The Huskers trail 7-0 and 9-7 before rallying in the second half. Playing without starter Eldon McIlravy, who some feared dead after suffering a skull fracture, Harris Andrews throws a 25-yard touchdown pass to Bill Callahan to give NU the monumental win.

In a clash of unbeaten, top-ranked teams for the National Championship, the Cornhuskers hammer the No. 2 Crimson Tide. Johnny Rodgers (left) returns a punt 77 yards for a TD to make it 13-0 in the first quarter, and the rout is on. The Blackshirts force two fumbles and limit the 'Bama offense to a single score. With the win, the '71 Cornhuskers stake their claim as the greatest team of all time.

In Coach Tom Osborne's (left) final game, No. 2 Nebraska needed a perfect game vs. Peyton Manning and the high-powered Volunteers to grab at least a share of the Mythical National Championship. They get it in a second-half blizzard of rushing yards and touchdowns. Ahman Green rumbles for an Orange Bowl-record 206 yards as 13-0 Nebraska lays claim to the national title.

Memorial Stadium's goalposts come down for the first time since 1959 after the Cornhuskers hold on to upset top-ranked Oklahoma in a classic contest. The win, the first over OU for fifth-year coach Tom Osborne, is powered by Rick Berns'  (left) 113 yards against a softened Sooner defense. Monsterback Jim Pillen pounces on a Billy Sims fumble at the NU 3-yard-line to preserve the win.

The culmination of everything that Tom Osborne had built. Nebraska, led by the magnificent Tommie Frazier, destroys the No. 2 Gators to win its second straight national title.The Blackshirts are fast, mean and immovable in shutting down the vaunted Florida "Fun N Gun" attack. It is NU's record 36th win in three years.

After No. 2 Texas and No. 1 Ohio State both drop their  bowl games, the door is suddenly open for the Cornhuskers' first National Championship. The Huskers bolt to a 10-0 lead, only to see LSU go ahead on the 3rd quarter's last play. But the Cornhuskers mount a 67-yard fourth-quarter, championship-winning drive. Quarterback Jerry Tagge (left) sneaks the final three feet, providing perhaps the greatest pose in Husker history.

In one of the most definitive fourth quarters in Nebraska football history, the Cornhuskers wear out the near-impervious Miami defense to win the National Championship in Miami. Corey Schlesinger's two touchdown runs provide the difference in the game, while quarterbacks Tommie Frazier (left) and Brook Berringer combine to keep the 'Canes off balance.

In the greatest college football game ever played, No. 1 Nebraska defeats No. 2 Oklahoma in a see-saw, red-and-white fireworks show. Johnny Rodgers' 72-yard punt return for a score, which gave NU an early 7-0 lead, has become the stuff of legend, as has Jeff Kinney's (left) fourth scoring run to give the Huskers the lead for good. Rich Glover and Larry Jacobsen ensure the potent Sooner offense doesn't come up with any last-second miracles in Norman, and the rest is history.
